Inventory financing is business funding used to buy stock for resale, secured mainly by that stock and repaid as it sells. Pinecroft Funding Group, a small-business funding broker in San Marcos, TX, helps Hays County retailers and wholesalers decide whether it fits their sales cycle and presents requests to lending partners, which make credit decisions and set rates and terms.
| Built for | Stock bought for resale ahead of demand |
|---|---|
| Wrong tool for | Slow-moving or perishable goods with no resale value |
| Secured by | The stock itself, normally backed by a UCC filing |
| Repaid | As the goods sell, on a schedule or per item |
| Hays County retail | 737 employer establishments; the largest payroll of any sector (Census CBP 2023) |
| Who decides | The lending partner, never Pinecroft |
How inventory financing works
A partner advances part of the cost of the goods you are buying, often a share of their wholesale value rather than the whole, and takes a security interest in the inventory. You pay the balance down as the stock sells. Some structures are a term loan for a single large purchase; others are a revolving line with a borrowing base, where the amount you can draw rises and falls with the value of inventory on hand, confirmed by regular reports or audits.
Because the goods are the main security, partners care about what they could recover if they had to sell them. Branded hardware or building materials hold value; fashion items, perishables and custom products hold less, and partners lend less against them.
Collateral and the UCC filing
Almost every inventory facility involves a UCC-1 financing statement, a public notice, usually filed with the state, that the partner has a claim on the described assets. A filing that names "all inventory" or "all assets" can make it harder to finance anything else until it is released. Ask what the filing will cover, and keep the release in your records when the facility is paid off.
Retail and wholesale in Hays County, TX
Retail trade had 737 employer establishments in Hays County in 2023, employing 16,665 people with an annual payroll of about $572.9 million, the largest payroll of any sector in the county (U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023). Wholesale trade added 213 establishments, 128 of them with fewer than five employees. Closer to the office, ZIP 78666 counted 393 retail establishments, more than any other sector in that ZIP (U.S. Census Bureau, ZIP Code Business Patterns 2023).
Retailers and distributors share one problem: cash goes into goods long before it comes back out of sales. A gift shop stocking for the holidays, a building-supply dealer buying a truckload at a better price, or a distributor taking on a new line all need to finance stock that may take weeks or months to sell.
Inventory financing, factoring, a line or working capital
| What it is secured by | When it fits | |
|---|---|---|
| Inventory financing | The goods you are buying | Stock that sells through in a predictable cycle |
| Invoice factoring | Receivables sold to a factor | You sell on terms to business customers and wait to be paid |
| Line of credit | Typically a blanket lien or an owner guarantee | Smaller, repeat purchases of uneven size |
| Working capital loan | Typically a blanket lien or an owner guarantee | A one-off stock purchase with a known sell-through date |
Inventory financing funds the goods on the shelf; factoring funds the invoices after the goods are sold on credit. A wholesaler may use both: one to buy, the other to wait out net-60 terms. Pinecroft does not arrange factoring, but it helps to know which problem you are solving.
Does your stock turn fast enough?
The cost of carrying financed inventory runs every day the goods sit. A rough check before you call:
- Estimate how many days the goods you plan to buy will take to sell, from past sales of similar stock.
- Compare that with the repayment schedule in any offer.
- Account for markdowns, returns and shrinkage on items that do not sell.
- Ask whether the payment still fits if sell-through takes half as long again.
If the answer to the last question is no, buy less, or look at a structure with more flexible repayment.
What partners usually ask for
- An inventory list or aging report
- Purchase orders or supplier quotes for the new stock
- Recent sales history by product line
- Tax returns and the business bank statements
- Any lien already filed against the stock
Each partner sets its own requirements and may inspect or audit inventory on a schedule.
