Pinecroft Funding Group, a small-business funding broker in San Marcos, TX, explains how long equipment can be financed: partners tie the term to the asset's useful life, its age and resale market, the structure chosen and the business's history. A longer term lowers the payment and raises the total cost. Notes for Hays County contractors and practices.
The rule partners start from
A partner financing equipment wants the loan paid down faster than the equipment loses value. If the balance stays above what the machine would sell for, the collateral no longer covers the debt. So the term is set by the asset's useful life first and the business second. A compact track loader, a dental chair and a point-of-sale tablet wear out at very different speeds, and they get very different terms.
What moves the term up or down
- Type of asset. Heavy, durable machinery and vehicles usually support longer terms than computers and fast-changing technology.
- New or used. Used equipment has less life left, so the term is usually shorter, and very old machines may not be financed at all.
- Hours and condition. For construction equipment, hours on the meter matter as much as the model year.
- Resale market. Common brands with active used markets are easier to lend against than specialty or custom equipment.
- Structure. A fair-market-value lease, a $1 buyout lease, an equipment loan and an EFA can each be written over different periods.
- The business. Time in business, cash flow and credit affect whether the partner offers its longest terms.
Hays County, TX contractors and practices compared
Two of the county's biggest groups of employers buy very different equipment. Construction had 764 employer establishments in 2023, 484 of them specialty trade contractors, and ambulatory health care had 414, including 142 physician and 78 dental offices (U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023). A specialty contractor's trailer and compact machine are built to last and resell, and partners can often stretch the term. A practice's imaging unit holds its value for a while but can be overtaken by newer technology, and its software and computers age fastest of all.
A practice buying a mix of long-lived and short-lived items can ask to finance them separately, so the computers are paid off before they are replaced. Contractor financing covers how partners look at trades.
Longer is not automatically better
A longer term lowers each payment, which helps cash flow, but it also means paying interest for more months, so the total cost rises. The way to decide is to compare totals, not payments. Run the same price, down payment and rate through the equipment payment calculator twice, once with each term, and look at the total cost line. Then ask whether the equipment will still be earning in the final year of the longer term.
Two more checks: whether the offer charges for paying off early, and whether you expect to trade the equipment in before the term ends. If you do, a shorter term or a lease may fit better.
How to finance heavy equipment sensibly
- Get a written quote with make, model, year, hours and serial number.
- Ask what term the partner offers for that specific machine, and why.
- Compare total cost across two terms and across a loan and a lease.
- Keep the payment comfortable in a slow month, not just an average one.
